Hey guys, I haven’t had time to do any reviews cause of school work, but it’s the holidays now so expect more!!!!
Code Orange Kids | Cycles
Bought this the other day. Code Orange Kids from Pittsburgh play a style of hardcore similar to Kerouac and Pariso, chaotic and technical. A lot of powerviolence influence and sludge influence in this record, something I’ve began to take notice of again in music. Lyrics about decaying life and how shit the world is, wanting to die and isolate yourself.

The Drums | Self Titled
Holy shit I love this album. Elements of surf rock and the best of indie rock put together into this chronicle of a young man’s procrastination of responsibility in adulthood. A record about having fun with friends pretty much. The record combines influences from early Surf Rock musicians like Eddie & The Showmen and The Beach Boys, and 80’s post punk/pop bands like The Fall and New Order.

Snow Patrol | Eyes Open
One of my favourite Britpop/rock releases in recent years; Snow Patrol’s ‘Eyes Open’ resembles a sound to other British bands like Athlete, Razorlight, and Doves. I can’t say much for the lyrics on this record; typical “love loss/self rejuvenation” sorta crap that churns out annually of all big name record labels. Although saying that, the instrumentation is pretty well constructed ‐ considering it follows a pretty stock‐standard pop framework. In all honesty, I don’t know how I can possibly justify listening to this mainstream piece of crap: it’s just really great to listen to ‐ unexplainable… Basically, just listen and don’t ask questions. Oh, and you probably heard that heaps sobby song Chasing Cars on the OC when you were like 12.

Picked up the Beastie Boys and Naked On The Vague records in Melbourne and received my copy of Daylight’s new EP in the mail when I got back. I will post reviews for these in the next day or so. In the meantime; listen to Daylight they are bringing back depressing emo rock and the new EP is flawless. Listen to Naked On The Vague they are the 21st Century Sonic Youth incarnate and are locals from Sydney. Listen to the Beastie Boys, why not?
Raindance | You And I
Really cool EP I found on Toxicbreeds a couple of months back. Those who are familiar with the stylings of defunct Massachusetts hardcore band OUTRAGE will know of Raindance. Basically Raindance is the new name for the 5 piece who were made famous by their debut EP “Saviour”, a record which boasted 7 tracks which incorporated aspects of Melodic‐Hardcore, Post‐Hardcore, and Chatoic‐ Hardcore; reminiscent of bands like Alexisonfire, The Miracle Mile, and Every Time I Die. But this EP sports a far more chaotic and technical approach to hardcore than previous releases. Very similar feel to bands like Converge, The Chariot, and The Dillinger Escape Plan.

I have a few reviews saved and bought some new records I’d like to share!
Justin Vernon | Self Record
The mastermind behind the Bon Iver and Volcano Choir projects. Justin Vernon exposes his most sincere feelings in this musical chronicle; The remains of a man broken by love and the world around him. The expression of anguish through Vernon’s narratives creates a sense of empathy with the listener as we can’t help but feel responsible or distressed by Vernon’s tragedy ‐ true pain which we have all felt before. The instrumentation is immaculate, Vernon’s simple chord patterns are responsive to his vocals, and he is able to harmonise well with the guitar.

DOES IT REALLY SUCK DOE?
New segment I’m doing weekly. #DIRSD. Scrutinised songs/albums/eps reviewed by me
Ceremony | Hysteria
Does it really suck doe? I don’t think it does. I’m all for Ceremony’s early shit, but I think it was time for them to make some lasting changes to their music to open up to a broader audience (not implying they are going mainstream). The fresh, renovated sound by Ceremony reminds me of Eddy Current Suppression Ring and Royal Headache; a more sophisticated sound wouldn’t you think? I reckon everyone who has written it off needs to listen again with an open mind; remember when Break Even released Hell’s Gates and everyone got in a stink about how it wasn’t like Young At Heart? People should respect a band’s musical integrity and their endeavour to be the best they can.
If you don’t agree that’s fine, this is just one man’s opinion.
Listen here:
Ghoul | A Mouthful of Gold
Ghoul | Dunks
Again, one of my favourite Australian acts who have parted so abruptly in 2012. Ghoul, the Sydney based electronic/experimental 4 piece had been active since 2008 with their debut release “A Mouthful of Gold” which, on first listen, was a very daring style of electronic post‐jazz (can I say that? Does it count?). I loved every bit of it ‐ some say it has reminiscent style of early Radiohead, I disagree. To me it sounded like Triosk and early Gerling. Dunks was the second release from the band and was recognised as a mini album. It kept the same sound as A Mouthful of Gold but it’s evident the band focused more on writing complete compositions rather than improvised loops. Both are a great, relaxed listen enjoyed most during an evening of rain or isolation.
